Revision introduction

Balance a chemical equation by changing coefficients, never chemical formulae. A balanced equation conserves atoms of each element. Oxidation can involve addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen; reduction reverses these changes. Distinguish a chemical change, which forms new substances, from a physical change.

Original practice

Which coefficients balance H₂+O₂→H₂O?

  1. 2,1,2
  2. 1,1,1
  3. 1,2,1
  4. 2,2,1

Worked answer

2,1,2

2H₂+O₂→2H₂O gives four hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms on both sides.
