Revision introduction

Concentration can be expressed as molarity or molality. Molarity is moles of solute per litre of solution; molality is moles per kilogram of solvent. Molarity depends on temperature through volume. Raoult’s law describes ideal solution vapour pressure; deviations reflect differences in intermolecular interactions.

Original practice

What is the molarity of 0.5 mol dissolved to make 2 L of solution?

  1. 0.25 mol/L
  2. 1 mol/L
  3. 4 mol/L
  4. 2.5 mol/L

Worked answer

0.25 mol/L

M=n/V=0.5/2=0.25 mol/L.
