Revision introduction

GDP measures value added within domestic territory over a period. Avoid double counting intermediate products. Distinguish nominal from real GDP using the price basis. National income concepts adjust for depreciation, net factor income from abroad and net indirect taxes as required. A transfer payment is not payment for current production.

Consult the current official syllabus for examinable sections, project-only content, practicals, prescribed texts and exclusions. A unit index does not override those boundaries.

Original practice

Why exclude intermediate goods when adding final output?

  1. To avoid double counting
  2. Because they have no value
  3. Because all imports are zero
  4. To count the same value twice

Worked answer

To avoid double counting

The value of intermediate goods is already embodied in final goods.
