Revision introduction

Coulomb’s law gives the force magnitude k|q₁q₂|/r² for point charges. Electric field is force per positive test charge and is a vector. Add field vectors by superposition. Electric potential is a scalar and adds algebraically. Distinguish the sign of a charge from the magnitude of the force.

Original practice

If the separation of two point charges doubles, their force becomes…

  1. one quarter
  2. twice
  3. four times
  4. unchanged

Worked answer

one quarter

F∝1/r², so replacing r with 2r divides the force by 4.
